Description
This lot is produced by the Tulise washing station which is located at 2100 metres in the Tulise Kebele in the Woreda of Gedeb, part of one of the most famous coffee producing regions of Ethiopia: Yirgacheffe.
The station employs 10 staff full time the year round and 30-40 additional workers during the production months between November and January.
Speciality Coffee in this area is cultivated under the canopy of native shade trees and cherry is selectively hand-picked.
On delivery to the washing station, coffee is pulped, washed and sun dried on raised beds for a period of 12-15 days.
During the hottest part of the days it is covered to preserve moisture and covered again over night to protect from rainfall. On the beds the coffee is raked continually to ensure even drying.
Finally the coffee is stored in Jute and transported to the Siz Agro dry mill in Ethiopia’s capital city Addis Ababa where it is hulled, destoned, screened and colour sorted.
The farmers who contributed cherries to this lot were paid the farm gate price of 6500 Ethiopian Birr / Feresula. This season’s price for speciality coffee was the highest ever paid. Yield’s were affected last season due to erratic and sparse levels of rainfall and on the whole, high quality washed lots were far less common that natural processed coffees.
